#34. Plain Old Clover

June 10th, 2014: Oil on Board, 6" x 6".  This is just some plain old white clover.  You'll find it trying to take over your pristine lawn, at your neighborhood park and playing field, from city to country, rural field to mountain meadow.  It seems to be pretty ubiquitous in most parts... at least most parts I've been... but I still think it's pretty.  To think I was worried this would wilt as I painted, these little guys kept moving around but they just got taller and perkier the whole time, first time I've seen that happen.

#33. Those Wild and Crazy Roses

June 9th, 2014: Oil on Board, 6"x 6".  I actually did a step by step sort of thing today to share my process, although I seem to do it differently every time.  The roses were some of the few left that weren't destroyed in the hail storm yesterday.  I tried some different colors in the background and the shading this time, just to mix it up a little.

Setting up today's subject involved a short walk followed by way too much time playing with the branches, assorted receptacles and moving the lamp around until finding the perfect composition.

Then I finally got to the painting.

#32. Two Times a Columbine

June 7th, 2014: Oil on Board, 6" x 6".  I've heard that there are no hummingbirds in Europe, a shame, I know, but they do have columbines.  Because there are no hummingbirds, the European columbine never decided to evolve elongated, conical spikes to woo the tiny birds like the American version and they look entirely different.  I find things like this fascinating, you may or may not.  Two times because I struggled with the not quite open flower and had to paint it twice, but the leaves came together easily and are my favorite part.

#31 - Persistant Peony

SOLD!

June 6th, 2014: Oil on Board, 6" x 6".  This peony was brought home for me from the gallery in Taos and I found this little Japanese vase at the thrift store.  I've since been staring at this pair sitting on our coffee table and hoping the flower would last long enough for me to get the chance to paint it.  It made it, barely!  I had forgotten how strong these are, the smell reminds me of early summers when I was little.

Shiny Painting Accessories

June 5th, 2014.  Boy, having to go out of town for the weekend really threw me off my schedule!  I've been trying to get back to painting and things keep coming up.  I thought today would be the day, but instead I spent the morning planting seeds in the garden and the afternoon framing a few pieces.  I've always been drawn to silver frames, but they never seemed right, until now!  I love how they feel both modern and traditional and they appear dark at times and light at others.  They make my little paintings look so classy!  Keep your fingers crossed that I'll be back to painting tomorrow.
